'Yes I too am fond of this place, it's so calm and beautiful when for such a small place it has such a...how do they say it...err bloody history? Well you know what I mean. It gives me hope.' Shadow replied in the same sub-vocal manner whilst walking slowly and keeping pace with Elegance. She turned her head when the driver behind made his displeasure known causing him to back off enough. Having crimson optics did have an advantage here; it made her glare so much more menacing.
Eventually they pulled up to the cafe and the lady sitting at the counter did a double take when she heard the car speak, belatedly noting the dragon next to it. "James? Susan? Are you there?" she sounded concerned and a little afraid.
"Mum! You wont believe the day we had, we slew a dragon!" came the excited chatter of the eldest child. The younger three all nodding along in agreement but keeping a bit quieter as their mother and aunt seemed a little upset.
"James! Oh your Aunt's gone looking for you, we said to stay in the area!" said woman marched over to the car seemingly equal parts exasperated and upset at her children apparently getting carried away. "Thank you so much, I hope they didn't inconvenience you?" she spoke to Shadow first not quite realising the car was also a person.
'It was fine, we played together over on the hillside, Elegance' here she gestured to the car 'and I let them fulfill their dream of slaying a dragon so it was no trouble.' Shadow acknowledged that she didn't have the best people skills but she was trying, being as polite as she could and kneeling down to put herself more at level with the woman.
"Oh...you mean...I'm so sorry I didn't realise!" the woman addressed Elegance seemingly embarrassed.

Outside the café, Elegance opened her door and released the seat-belts, letting the children pile out into their mother's and aunt's arms. Once they were clear, she transformed back into her robot mode, with a smile on her face. The relationships between human progenitors and their offspring were unfamiliar to transformers, yet still lovely to witness. She bowed her head and sat down on the road, forcing traffic around her, and replied reassuringly 'That's quite alright. I'm a robot in disguise after all, I do expect it.'
'We had fun, though you might want to advise your young ones to ask first before throwing water balloons at sleeping dragons. They're not always so friendly.' she added with a warning but amused look at the three children. 'Anyway, they wanted to continue their game at the "castle" – which was this café before I asked if they meant Hastings Castle and put an idea in their heads. I'll be going up there myself, so if it's okay with you, I could keep monitoring them. I have the surveillance equipment for it.'

"They threw a water-balloon at you whilst you were sleeping?!" the woman seemed slightly afraid at this, though Shadow did not quite understand why as she was not deliberately being threatening, not quite realising that her spikes, claws, and fangs did add together to be quite frightening for a mother of small children. "Yes, but do not be concerned. I am uninjured and not angry" she paused "though I would prefer to be asked next time, if it is at all possible?" Shadow sounded as polite as possible, but was coming off a little stiff in her mannerisms. "Oh, well if you're sure you're not mad?" the lady seemed a little nervous to Shadow attempted to reassure. "No I am not 'mad' as you say" it didn't quite come out the way she intended but it appeared that the woman finally understood that Shadow was just awkward and not secretly angry. "Children, you shouldn't throw things at people when they're sleeping, it's rude and you should all know better!" she scolded somewhat softly as though to reinforce a lesson that she believed they had already learned.
At Elegance's suggestion the children turned to their mother/aunt and gave her the most pleading look possible, "Pleeeeeeeaaaassseeee? We'll be good honest!" was the cry that echoed amongst them. The woman bit her lip slightly appearing to think about it, "Well I'm not sure, though suppose it would be fine. I'd have to let Janet know. We'd probably prefer to come along with you though, I'd rather not let them out of my sight right now." She appeared a little nervous as though worried she'd offend but at the same time realising that so far her sister and hers' offspring were all fine. So it was unlikely to be any threat, but still maternal instincts were strong as she'd been worried about them for a while.
The children cheered at the approval and high fived each other grinning all the while.

'Of course, I understand.' Elegance agreed with a reassuring smile. She had no plans for the day, not when she could while away a year on her hobbies. So why not spend a few hours with some delightful small humans and their equally delightful, slightly less small progenitors? 'Please, let me give you and Janet and the children a lift up to the castle. Why not ride in style?' From where she sat on the road, she rolled forward and transformed, reassembling into the E-Type Zero and landing on her wire wheels with a soft bouncy thud. The door swung open invitingly, and her voice played from the radio speakers. 'Where can we pick up Janet?' The sportscar had space for two adults in the front, and the three children on the poky rear seats.
'Do you wish to tag along still? I'm afraid I don't have room for you.' she transmitted privately to Shadow.
*
Far away in the forest on the hill, the watcher transformed and took off into the air with a buzz, enabling stealth mode before it flew down to the town. It had to get the prize before the accursed Autobots!

"Oh...well thank you very much!" shepherding the children into the vehicle with expert care, she carefully climbed into the front passenger seat. "Janet should be over by the clock tower so if you head that way I'll send her a message to meet us there." She indicated the clock tower in the distance which was off to the left in the newer developed areas. The smaller children as the adults spoke became engaged in a mini poke war, but quieted down at their mother's/aunt's glare and soon became enraptured with looking outside again.
"I think I can stay a bit longer. I've been told I need to socialise more, and this does seem a good way to do so" Shadow responded sub-vocally and shifted back into dragon mode, doing a feline stretch and folding her wings tightly to her back; shifting a little awkwardly at the awed murmurs she could hear. Though once they moved off she kept pace easily enough with Elegance, even though she did occasionally glance around as though fearing another water-balloon or it's like. One hit, twice shy.

'And away we go.' Elegance announced, powering up her engines and driving toward the newer, or at least less old, part of Hastings in 2119. While she could see where Mum had pointed, Elegance checked an online map of the town and engaged her surveillance devices to find a nice route there. 'By the way, I don't believe I caught your name?' she asked the human female parental figure she just couldn't keep labelling as "Mum".
'Indeed..' Elegance agreed softly with Shadow, carefully driving alongside the walking dragon. After they were done with this outing, she figured she ought to get to know this odd transformer better. 'It may be irrational of me, but human beings are quite my favourite species..'
Soon, she'd navigated to the clock tower, and Elegance pulled up alongside the human identified as Janet. Looking up from putting her purchased in her handbag, Janet just looked stunned as she saw her sister and their children piled into a sleek antique sports-car. 'Holy... Where did you get that car?!'
'Cybertron.' said Elegance as she opened her door in invitation. 'But she's just borrowing.'
'What—' Astonished, Janet looked around as she saw Shadow walking into her field of vision. 'You, you're those Transformers, aren't you?'
'Mummy! Hop in! They're taking us for a ride up to the castle!'
Dumbfounded, Janet sat down in the luxury car. Actually, this was really quite nice...
'Seat belt.' Elegance reminded, then drove off...

"Oh yes, terribly sorry. I'm Mary, it's a pleasure to meet you" she sounded a little embarrassed as to be caught out in regards to her own manners but rallied quickly. "I must say you do give a very comfortable ride, thank you for this" she added as they drove waving to her seated sister and laughed "Indeed only borrowing! It seems the kids decided to ambush one of them and get them to play, thankfully they're both good sports over it" she informed her sister as she climbed into the car.
"Yes auntie, we slew a dragon and are rescuing a princess!" the oldest one exclaimed with glee.
Shadow mentally nodded in agreement though she could not make the motion herself so as to not alert Elegance's passengers as to the their secret conversation "Yes, I can see what you mean they are an interestingly diverse group...and stronger than they look. In more ways than one" Shadow easily kept pace with Elegance keeping her body under tight control so as to not knock anyone over, but regardless kept her optics open for anything strange which might happen. Funny how the day started out with her simply wanting a nap in a warm place near the sea.

Elegance took the family and, keeping pace alongside her, Shadow on a fairly pleasant drive through the town of Hastings and up to the ruins of the castle on the hill. From her radio, she played music and regaled the children and parents with tales of how she'd once carried a prince and a princess on their wedding day, battled a jet through the streets of London, and defended the Large Hadron Collider from Decepticons. In the car park outside the castle visitor's centre, Elegance let her human passengers out, transformed, and bought them all tickets under her battered old English Heritage membership card. The humans went through the gates, Elegance stepped over the wall. As the children rushed ahead to explore, Mary and Janet talked together, Elegance fell in beside Shadow, beginning with a little opening small talk now they could do so easily. 'So, what brings a Shadow to sunny Hastings?'

Shadow largely kept quiet as they moved through the area and kept herself alert ensuring that she didn't accidentally step on anyone as they moved through some of the narrower and older parts on the way to the castle. She largely kept to herself and was unused to long conversations, but did chime in with an anecdote or two occasionally. It was an effort for her but one she felt was rewarding.
As they made it to the castle Shadow kept to the back of the line watching as the children excitedly ran up to start to play in the old grounds humming to herself softly. She tilted her head to look at Elegance out of her right eye, the left having a good view of the area out to sea. "Not much to be honest, I normally live in the countryside, or with the RSC when they need someone to help with their plays" she replied quietly, smiling slightly as if in remembrance of something slightly amusing (though to be fair it looked like some sort of cross between a smile and like she was bearing her teeth slightly).
"I like this country a lot, it's more home to me than most other places I've been in years" it was brutal honesty, her 'childhood home' as the humans would say had been an outpost colony which had been destroyed years ago and cybertron itself was too ravaged by the war to ever feel like home. "But I was told I needed a holiday, apparently that is when you go somewhere nice and do very little. So I picked this place, I like the sound of the sea" she seemed amused by the thought of a holiday and equally quite fascinated by the concept as she trailed off into wistfulness as she spoke of the sound of the sea.

Elegance arched one of her optics, in an affection mimicking a human's raised eyebrow. She had been living among them quite a while after all. 'The Royal Shakespeare Company? I'm impressed. I caught a few performances back in the day. Though back then I could only park outside the Globe and watch via surveillance... I still have to, to be honest.' she reminisced.
She gazed out to English Channel, scanning and zooming in on the gulls wheeling in the air, at waves crashing on the pebbly beach, at the humans enjoying the day at the seaside. 'It's a nice white noise, isn't it? From a vast flood of corrosive liquid across seventy percent of the planet, and yet still they cling on and thrive...' she mused. 'I've been in deep cover here for over a century. I fell in love with the place. Every time I come back or come out of hibernation, it's always different, yet somehow the same.'
Looking down and refocusing her optics, she peered down at one of the signs telling the history of Hastings Castles. She read out some key phrases 'Construction began in 1170 AD, on the orders of King William the Conqueror, to replace the earlier prefabricated wooden motte-and-bailey castle he had erected during his invasion four years before... But it was possibly the site of an even earlier fortification, perhaps built by the Saxons or even dating back to the Romans, six hundred years previously... It's astonishing, sometimes, how much humans have done and changed in such a short span of time. Especially the small ones. Sometimes I think we Cybertronians could learn something from them. Especially the small ones.'
*
Even now, one of the small, ever-changing humans was doing something. James had spotted a strange glint beneath one of the green bushes growing around the castle grounds, and quickly run off to have a look. Maybe it was a toy. Maybe it was treasure! But when he crouched down, he saw it was something stranger and far more interesting. A bug! A big beetle, with a long nose and a shiny black and purple shell. It was pretty. Mum would love it! 'Come here, Bug...' he coaxed, reaching under the bush for it...

Shadow nodded "Yes, they have been very kind to me. I am not much of an actor, but I'm good at going unseen and I've enjoyed assisting in the set designs" she paused for a moment before giving a small shrug "I could always ask if they could save you an area during one of their outside performances? They're very good at what they do, even if I don't always understand it." Shakespeare's language was a little strange after all.
"Yes it is a pleasant sound, soothing as much as it is deadly. It's strange, looking at the records, so many people have died in there, yet they still fearlessly travel upon it and dive beneath the surface." Shadow paused for a moment and blinked quietly contemplating "I've not been on earth all that long, I was often sent out alone to deal with... issues for my operations. Whenever I came back, friends had died and the world moved on. I don't make friends easily, so it's always been hard." She flicked her tail looking over to the children, one of whom seems to have found something interesting. "There's much we could learn from them, they change and grow quickly within a generation or two. Their young ones are often brutally honest." She frowned slightly and squinted, being on alert as she was Shadow thought, was something shining in the grass over there?
"Elegance, I may be over-reacting, but I think I see something shining there possibly metallic in nature? Do you see it?" she made a gesture towards the spot moving her center of gravity subtly in order to make a wing-powered leap if need be, but without alerting anyone. It could be nothing, but old instincts died hard.

'Oh?' Elegance turned her head to see, her optics catching a glint of light in the boy's hands as he pulled whatever it was out from under the bush before he carefully covered it. 'Hmm, you're right. But it's probably just a toy or coin or bit of litter.' she dismissed lightly as James hurried away to show Mary his find. 'I wouldn't worry. This area is pretty safe by human standards. While children need monitoring, it's important to let them learn and discover on their own and make up their imaginative games like earlier. Who knows, whatever it is, we'll probably be fighting it before long...' Elegance suggested with a grin.
*
'Look Mum! Look at this bug I found!' James exclaimed, rushing up to his mother.
Mary tried not to let her grimace show as she dreaded what gross creepy-crawly it could be. Last time it had been a spider, and before that a slug. Oh, James, you shouldn't bother the wildlife—' But with a fascinated smile, James opened his hands and showed her the big beetle. It had needle-like nose, black-and-purple metallic shell, and six mechanical legs. Very creepy. 'Uh, James, honey, maybe we should show the Autobots—'
But then the beetle spread wings from its shell and flew right at her. Mary squealed, instinctively covered her face, and felt a sharp sting on her hand.
As the beetle flew away, Janet came to her with concern. 'Are you okay?' James also came close to hug her, sobbing 'I'm sorry, Mummy!'
Mary hugged James back and answered dazedly 'It's okay, I'm fine. It's just a little sting.'
'Hmm, still, maybe we should find a first-aid station, and tell Elegance and Shadow?'
'No. Let's not bother the Autobots.'

Shadow hummed slightly at that but didn't quite relax, "If you say so. I suppose I'm still getting used to this 'danger-free' feeling; I tend to freak out slightly when startled. It's why I was so harsh with the little ones, I'm still talking to someone to help me through it all." Shadow paused for a moment "I do quite enjoy these games, it's like helping out in the theater or playing the dragon in the St. George's parades" though she was still a bit anxious, but would calm down soon enough. Or would have had Mary not squealed, sending Shadow into a ptsd powered leap, shifting into her dragon mode and landing somewhat protectively around the group; mantling her wings slightly. "What is it? What's wrong?" she spoke a little harshly, voice rough with worry, tail rigid as a counterbalance. Thankfully she'd enough presence of mind to watch where she had landed and how so no-one was hurt though some people were startled.
However, out of the corner of her left optic, she did glimpse that same, glittering, metallic, object as before and quickly turned her head to get a better look.

Having flown, Shadow arrived on the scene first, surprising the humans once more. Meanwhile, the strange beetle had flown behind the castle wall and out of sight. Questioned by Shadow , Mary rubbed and covered her hand, insisting 'It's nothing. James found a bug, it startled and stung me—'
But then, all their attentions were taken by an almighty crash from behind them and the ground shook beneath their feet.
Hearing the shout, Elegance had looked around, assessed source and situation, and come running as swiftly as she could. But she had come running on the large, heavy, and forceful feet of a giant robot, and not reckoned on the stability of the soil beneath her. Halfway across the open space, her foot thrust right through the grass, the earth beneath, and the ceiling of a long-forgotten dungeon. That ceiling collapsed, and Elegance plummeted through dirt and rocks and clods of grass, disappearing into a dark subterranean space.

Shadow frowned and squinted seeing the sharp metallic object disappear before looking back down at Mary "You might have an allergic reaction to it? It is possible that whatever it was isn't originally native to this world too. I would like-" her voice cut off quickly as the crash made her jump and curl around the humans in a protective fashion snarling in the direction of the perceived threat. Only to realise that it was Elegance who had fallen into a hole...she felt a little silly then.
"Elegance? Are you all right?" she called out carefully checking the solidity of the ground around her. Before talking to the humans with her, "the ground seems a little unstable, would it be alright, if you climb onto my back then I can make the short hop back to solid ground and then check on my friend?" she wasn't exactly sure of the appropriate etiquette here; but knew herself well enough to know that she could fit all the humans on her back safely and make a very gentle jump over to where according to what sensors she had was a very solid and safe area. It would be better than transforming back and picking them up; but her forelimbs were usable as her hands so she could theoretically carry them that way...it just wasn't very dignified.

Meanwhile, from around a crumbling castle wall, optics focused on the scene. The watcher made a low hiss of annoyance. Blasted heavy-footed Autobots! They'd ruin everything without even trying. He couldn't let them stumble across the prize too.
*
Coughing up clods of dirt from her mouth, Elegance pulled herself up out of a pile of soil and rubble, stunned by what had happened. One moment: dashing bravely across the castle courtyard. The next: plummeting through the ground and landing hard upon her posterior. It was all so terribly undignified. So, first question, how could she regain her cool and collected manner? She heard Shadow's voice echoing down to her, and called back 'I'm okay, but my name has taken a bit of a dent.' Yes, dry and self-deprecating wit, that would do. 'And I'm going to need a good clean and buff after this.'
Brushing the dirt from her optics and fluttering her door-wings, Elegance stood up and found herself in darkness, illuminated only by a shaft of light from the hole now well above her head. She switched her chest headlights on; reflecting off the rock dust in the air, the two beams of light cut through the darkness and shone upon a distant stone wall. With a sonar ping, Elegance got the sense of a large, subterranean space. 'I normally avoid the underground scene.' she sighed.
*
Above, Mary and Janet stared a moment at Shadow, working out what it was she proposed. It was one thing to ride in a Transformer in the shape of a sportcar with seatbelts and safe handles, but it was quite another to cling to the back of one in the form of a dragon. But then they heard a scream. 'Elly!' It was Susan, afraid for her new friend, and hurrying to the edge of the hole. 'Susan! No!' Janet cried, but before they could react, the girl gave a sudden squeal and disappeared into the hole.
*
Looking up in alarm, Elegance jumped out of her heap, tracked Susan's rate of descent, lifted her mighty hands of steel, and caught her out of the air. 'I've got her!' Elegance called back, then examined the small girl in her hands. Unfortunately, shocked, Susan started to cry. 'It's okay, I've got you.' Elegance tried to reassure her. She knew a hug would be appreciated, but she only had cold metal to offer her.
*
Distraught for her daughter, Janet turned to Shadow, begging 'You have to take me to her!'
'Yes. You must take me down there too.' Mary added stiffly. 'I can help.'

Responding to Elegance Shadow sighed "I am glad you are alright, give me a moment and I'll come and pick you up" whilst it would be a strain on her wings Shadow could, for a short period, carry another cybertronian of Elegance's size; it was just very unwieldy and hurt her joints for she was build for agility not for strength.
Seeing their nervousness Shadow tilted her head much like a confused cat "I have ridges you can hold onto and I would be very careful, you would not fall," she wasn't exactly sure why the humans were a little confused as she crouched, with her belly to the ground, so they could get on.
Shadow startled and reared up slightly onto her haunches when the girl ran towards to hole, clearly confused by the child heading straight into clear danger and was a lot less surprised when the girl toppled in. She did when she noticed the human's panic however, nod to the child's parent and spoke with a calm tone her combat training reasserting itself "I will take you down, but first, what of the other children, the ground here is not stable. I propose that I could first carry them in my fore-claws to the stable ground over there" she pointed to the car park which her sensors said was still safe "and then come back for the both of you? I realise it is undignified, but I do not wish for anyone to get hurt. I am capable of hovering so I can pick you up without disturbing the ground." She paused for a moment and added a little unsure "would this be okay? Elegance is with her now so she is in no immediate danger; but you and the others might be."
Shadow's sensors were picking up on the fragile ground that her own panicked landing had caused and as such decided to be the responsible one and approach the situation as calmly as her frenzied systems would allow, she was concerned and rightly worried but long training and field work had taught her how to put it away and focus on things one step at a time.

With their frightened children under their arms, the two mothers looked anxiously around, but soon accepted Shadow's sensible plan. 'Yes, yes, we'll do that.' Janet agreed, ushering the children toward Shadow. But James was reluctant, not wanting to go far from his mother and still worried for her after the bug-bite. She was acting a bit funny... 'Mummy?' Mary guided him toward Shadow, saying 'It is okay. Go with the Autobot. She will take you to a safe place.' 'We'll be right after you, okay?'
The children approached Shadow, and gingerly went where she directed them, whether to climb on her back or be picked up in her claws.
*
Meanwhile, Elegance was trying to soothea frightened child and finding it more difficult by far than battling Decepticons during the war. At last, she gently placed Susan in her back cavity, strapped a seatbelt over her, and then transformed around her. The E-Type bumped down on the stony floor, feeling rather incongruous in this ancient cavern. She finished by extending her soft-top roof overhead and turning the heaters on to warm her interior. 'I wanted to give you a hug.' she said gently over the radio speakers. 'I hope this one works?'
Having been startled out of her tears, Susan sniffled and stroked Elegance's soft upholstery. 'I think so.' she mumbled. 'I was worried 'bout you!'
'It's good to be worried about other people, Susan. And to want to help. But when there's been an accident, you have to make sure you're not getting into danger yourself... Now, come on, let's have a little look around.' And find a useful distraction while we wait. Powering her engines, wary of causing more disturbances (and she'd done enough) Elegance drove very slowly away from the pile of rubble, her tyres feeling stone flagstones beneath. 'Susan, I want you to look out the window and tell me what you see.' Elegance asked, slackening the seatbelt for the girl to move. Her high-beam headlights picked out distant columns supporting what was left of the roof.
Susan pressed her small nose to the window, and soon cried out excitedly 'I see footprints! Big robot ones!'
'Well, they're probably mine.'
'No, they're all blocky! Like a boy bot!'
Pausing, Elegance scanned the area, noting curiously 'And I haven't walked here yet.' So, she wasn't the first Transformer to be here...

Worried for the small humans Shadow twisted her neck slightly to direct them properly onto her back safely between her wings where they could hold onto her spines. Once she was satisfied with their positioning she spoke to them "Okay I'm going to make the jump now, don't worry you will not fall, but there might be a slight bump; just hold onto my spines, the err...orange things jutting out of my back. Yes those, good" made a VERY gentle short hop over to the stable ground before crouching down onto her belly. "Okay we're here, my sensors indicate that this is a safe and stable area. Do not wander off, we will be back with your parents as soon as we have recovered Susan. Here," she passed them a small communicator, a back-up out of storage, "you can talk to me with this, okay?" she gave a brief explination of how it worked 'push button to talk, release to receive' and once she was sure that they understood she walked a little way to the left before launching herself into the air making sure not to catch the two small one in the down draft.
Flying over to where Janet and Mary were Shadow hovered just above them and extended her foreclaws "Grab on, then I can adjust my grip and take you down safely" she told them holding her hands palm up so they could climb onto them, mindful of her downdraft and keeping her wing beats at the appropriate intervals for a successful and smooth hover.
"I gave the two young humans my spare communicator, so they can keep in touch just in case, you doing alright down there? I'm bring down Susan and Mary now." Shadow informed Elegance over the comms keeping it as quiet as possible from the two humans so as not to alarm them. "Mary's acting a bit odd, not as worried as I'd have thought from my research into human behaviors...do some humans get all stiff when worried?" Shadow would defer to Elegance's judgement on this as she wasn't really all that sure...and most of her research came from theatre, which was known to exaggerate.

If the children hadn't been so worried, they might have cheered at their first dragon-back ride. As it was, they held tightly to Shadow's spines and gave each other reassuring words and pats to cover up their own fears at being up so high, Susan and Elegance being in the hole, and the bug stinging Mummy. But James tried to be brave, even as he climbed off in the carpark with his small face pale. He took the communicator solemnly, listened carefully to the instructions, and said. 'Okay, I'll use the talkiphone. Please get Mummy and Aunty and Susan and Elly.'
Next, Mary and Janet climbed on. Mary seemed less worried about this, but she was silent and focused during the ride.
Meanwhile, Elegance transmitted a reply over their private channel. 'Hmm. They can do. Humans react to trouble in different ways: fight or flight, focus or shut down. Perhaps she's in shock.' she mused, but couldn't offer much more without being able to see and talk to Mary directly. 'Anyway, we're okay, just have a look around to keep Susan calm... There are some strange things down here.'
